With the amount of information that is available on the internet today, it can easily feel a little overwhelming. In order to help as much as we can, we have created a comprehensive section dedicated to answering the most frequently asked questions that our customers ask us.
Here you will find valuable information to help you make the best use of Vital's services and technologies.
What is a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is a computer that hosts only your site. Dedicated servers provide more hard-drive space and greater autonomy and flexibility, including choice of software, operating systems and database management systems.
What is a virtual server?
A virtual server is a web site that shares a computer/server with other web sites, unlike a dedicated server which hosts only one web site. A virtual server is sometimes referred to as "shared hosting." The primary advantage in choosing a virtual server over a dedicated server is significant savings in set-up and operating costs.
Why would I want my own IP address?
This gives you a static and direct connection to your web site. You may use it to modify or make links directly to a website that does not have DNS settings configured.
What is Co-location?
Co-location is the provision of space for communications equipment on the service provider's premises, usually within a data centre. For example, a website owner or an alternative telecoms provider could place their own equipment within our data centre, then have access to a number of carriers or other service providers.
What is Load Balancing and how can I benefit from it?
Load balancing distributes traffic efficiently among network servers so that no individual server is overburdened. Load balancing will enhance your website performance and user experience.
We can offer Cisco 400 series Local Directors and Nortel Alteon which are both commonly deployed for this purpose.
What is a rack and why would my business need one?
The Vital Rack solution is designed specifically for customers who want to outsource their internet operations with a higher level of security in mind. For customers with minimal physical space requirements, a rack is an excellent co-location solution, and the full cabinet comes standard with a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection.
What is a cage and why would my business need one?
The Vital Cage solution is designed with total security in mind; a closed cage environment provides a larger area of physical security, giving you ultimate flexibility with your web architecture and design. The 2.4m2 steel-walled cage has sliding locked front panels and solid post construction, and accommodates up to 3 racks.
What power options are available?
As standard, we normally provide 16 Amps per rack and 32 Amps per cage. Variations to suit individual requirements can be provided, and charges will vary according to your requirements.
How is security provided for my Shared Hosting account?
Your account is protected with assigned separate logins and user passwords that are required before any information is made available.
Can I access my Shared Hosting account through Telnet?
Yes, your Shared Hosting account can be accessed through Telnet, SSH (Secure Shell), and FTP sessions.
Can users access information from other users on the server?
No, each user can access only information pertaining to their own account on the server. Private user IDs and passwords prevent access from any other user on the rest of the server.
Why should I register a domain name?
A domain name is essential for any business trying to achieve a valuable presence on the internet. It establishes your independent mark on the world wide web, as your email address translates to: anything@your-domain-name and your website address becomes www.your-domain-name.
How do I establish a domain name?
We can register your domain with the registrar responsible for the extension you have chosen, e.g. .com, .co.uk, .org
How can I transfer my domain to Vital from my current ISP?
This really depends on whether it is a "hostile" transfer (where your current ISP can't or won't release it for any reason) or a "normal" transfer. During set-up, Vital will initiate a domain modification request with a particular registrar, requesting to transfer the domain to our DNS control. An additional consideration is whether your website is already live to the world with a fair amount of existing traffic.
How long will a Domain Name Transfer take?
After the request for transfer has been completed with the registrar, it still can take up to 24 hours for the necessary DNS information to propagate to key DNS servers on the world wide web. Do not therefore deactivate your existing website at another ISP on the very same day that you transfer your domain name to Vital for hosting.
What happens if it is a Hostile Domain Transfer?
If your current ISP can't or won't release the domain for transfer, you will need to contact the domain registrar and manually request a transfer. Before you do this, please contact Vital and request the tracking number for the original domain transfer request.
How long does it take to register a domain name?
Between 4 and 24 hours for a .com, .net, .org, .co.uk and .org.uk, and between 2 and 7 days for a .ltd.uk, .net.uk, .gov.uk and .ac.uk.
Sometimes registration of a domain name can take longer although this usually only occurs when either the central registries are very busy, insufficient information has been provided, certain documentation must be verified or your payment was unsuccessful.
